Tennessee Marriage License Requirements

1. If you are under the age of 18, you must have both parents or legal guardians present to sign the marriage certificate.  Otherwise, both parties must be 18 or older to obtain a marriage license.

2. Both applicants must be present to obtain a Marriage License.  The Courthouse can not mail out applications for obtaining a Marriage License nor can "I Do" Weddings In The Smokies obtain a Marriage License for you.  Both parties must be present at the time the Marriage License is issued.

3. Both participants must have a valid Drivers License or a Certified Birth Certificate to show proof of legal age to marry.

4. Must present S.S. Card if number is not on the Drivers License.

5. A valid passport is required if  participant is not a citizen of the United States.

6. If either party has been divorced or widowed, he/she will need to know the exact date that the divorce was final, or date of death.  If the bride had her name changed in her divorce and has not changed it on her Drivers License, then she will need to provide a certified copy of her divorce decree.

7. A blood test is not required to obtain a marriage license.

8. Tennessee requires no waiting period.

9. Marriage License must be used within 30 days of issuance.

10. Marriage License may be used same day of issuance.

11. NON RESIDENTS:  The fee for a Marriage License in Sevier County Tennessee is $45.00.  In all other counties, inside the state of Tennessee, the fee will be approximately $100.00.  The Sevier County Courthouse, the Pigeon Forge Satellite Office and the Shilling Center in Gatlinburg are the only 3 places that couples may obtain a Marriage License in the State of Tennessee for a fee of $45.00.  All other counties in the state of Tennessee will be charging a higher fee.  Cash only and exact change are required.  As of November 1, 2005, couples may pay with VISA or MASTERCARD.

12.  IN STATE RESIDENTS:  Fee for Marriage License is $105.00 cash only and exact change please.  In order to waive the $60.00 fee, the couple must complete a premarital course lasting 4 hours and present the document when obtaining a marriage license.  The required certificate can be obtained through the County Clerk's Office.  Certificate must be completed by certified counselor.  Please acquire the "Certification Of Completion Premarital Preparation Course" certificate from Courthouse for details.  

***Please note:  If one participant has a valid Tennessee Driver's License and the other participant has a valid out of state Driver's License, the fee is $105.00.  For example, your intended spouse is a Tennessee Resident with a Tennessee Driver's License and you are a Georgia Resident with a Georgia Driver's License, the fee for obtaining a Marriage License at Sevier County Courthouse or any Courthouse in Tennessee is $105.00.    

 ***You can not obtain a Marriage License through the mail courier, e-mail, fax or any means other than through the Marriage License Department at the county clerk's office. However, you can go to the following Sevier County Clerks Web-Site and pre-pay as well as pre-register.  This is only to save time when you go to the clerks office to pick up your Marriage License.
